FOKKER G1 ATTACK AIRCRAFT Citations from the Fokker G1 Mercury handbook : The Fokker G1 is an 2- or 3- persons attack aircraft, build as an 2 engined freecarring monoplane aircaft, suited for different kinds of missions, such as: GROUND ATTACK AIRCRAFT FIGHTER PLANE MEDIUM BOMBER DIVE BOMBER RECONNAISSANCE The idea of an developing a multi purpose attack aircaft came from Fokker, the idea behind it not. Also other aircraft builders around the world were developing similar aircaft around 1936 with similair specifications. The most know example is the Messerschmit Bf 110 Zerstorer. The idea of needing a multi purpose attack aircraft for the airforces is effidend by the large interest for licence building of the G1 abroad ( Spain, Denmark, Sweden ). After Fokker build the protype with Hispano suiza engines, the Dutch airforce became interested but they wanted some changes. The most important change was to exchange the engines for Bristol Mecury VIII because these engines were already selected for the Fokker D21 fighter plane. Fokker made an proposal for the airforce for their G1 with their specifications. The specifications to do reconnaisance jobs meant a relative large action radius. To accommodate the observer a lot of windows were needed ( in practice the pilot had the best view ! ) To signal back the information a radio operator was needed to operate the rather large radio ( 140 pounds ) . All this put together a large fighter platform was needed. From this probably came the designation G1, with G standing for Groot = Large The pilot in te front cockpit, the radio operator between the 2 main spares, and in the bcak the observer, tailgunner, bombardeer. The thought was to do recon missions with a 3 headed crew and for all other mission 2 crew members ( the tailgunner then operated the radio ) General data ( from the official handbooks ), for comparison the data from the Wasp version are added.
